"A 1% reduction in world-wide meat intake has the same benefit as a three trillion-dollarRead More investment in solar energy." ~ Chris Mentzel, CEO of Clean Energy "As environmental science has advanced, it has become apparent that the human appetite for animal flesh is a driving force behind virtually every major category of environmental damage now threatening the human future: deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution, climate change, biodiversity loss, social injustice, the destabilization of communities, and the spread of disease." ~ Worldwatch Institute, "Is Meat Sustainable?" “If every American skipped one meal of chicken per week and substituted vegetables and grains... the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than half a million cars off of U.S. Roads.” ~ Environmental Defense Fund "The livestock sector emerges as one of the top contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global. The findings of this report suggest that it should be a major policy focus when dealing with problems of land degradation, climate change and air pollution, water shortage and water pollution, and loss of biodiversity... The impact is so significant that it needs to be addressed with urgency." ~ United Nation Food and Agricultural Organization's report "Livestock's Long Shadow" “It’s not a requirement to eat animals, we just choose to do it, so it becomes a moral choice and one that is having a huge impact on the planet, using up resources and destroying the biosphere.” ~ James Cameron, movie director, environmentalist, new vegan VeganVideo.Org TryVeg.Org

If the proposal does not include the physical presence of human security in each school, it's notRead More enough. What additional public discussion is planned for this topic?

Would the schools be interested in an art historian talking to high achieving students about historyRead More as seen through art? I'm a retired college prof., who had a bright child go through the Guilford system. I might be of some service to the current crop of advanced children, etc. Christine Skeeles Schloss, Ph.D.

At the public forum for the BOE (back January 28, 2013), which I attended, Superintendent PaulRead More Freeman stated that there was indeed space for full day Kindergarten for next year (and even the teachers to teach it), but that there is concern that the space may be an issue in the years to come. A great deal of discussion around the full day K occurred at this meeting. To say I am dissapointed in the Superintendent (and the BOEs) decision to not include it is an understatment. It is virtually impossible for the Kindergarteners, in the roughly 2 hours a day they will have of instruction, to meet the demands of the Common Core State Standards that was instituted this school year. As Mr. Bloss stated in the 2012 BOF minutes "They are still not yet convinced there is an educational benefit," I would challenge this statement, as under the new curriculum I am afraid Guilford will fall behind if we wait until there are test scores to prove or disprove this point. Guilford is now the ONLY TOWN on the shoreline and immediately north from New Haven to Stonington without it (as of the 2013-2014 school year), and one of VERY FEW left in the state. Apparently all of these other towns know something that our town doesn't in regards to the benefit of full day Kindergarten. The "when" is now, not when we realize it's too late.
