Guilford Resident Applauded for Special Olympics Award

Theresa McSparran, a Guilford resident, was recognized before Sen. Ed Meyer and the State Senate for winning the Special Olympics Spirit of Life Award.

The following is a press release from Sen. Ed Meyer's office: 

The Connecticut State Senate paused briefly during discussion of the bipartisan bill on gun violence prevention and children’s safety to recognize Theresa McSparran on the floor of the Senate. Theresa has participated in the Special Olympics for more than 38 years, and was recently given the “Spirit of Life Award,” for exemplifying the true meaning of the Special Olympics. Senator Ed Meyer (D-Guilford) invited Theresa, a Guilford resident, before the Senate where she was recognized and given a legislative citation of congratulations. 

“Theresa McSparran’s record with the Special Olympics is truly inspiring, and it is my honor to serve as her State Senator,” said Senator Meyer. “The dedication and strength of character demonstrated by Theresa should serve to encourage inclusion and respect for individuals of all abilities.” 

For the past ten years Theresa has served as a spokesperson for the Special Olympics, and travels the state sharing her experiences and promoting the organization’s mission. Theresa is highly qualified for this position, having participated in Special Olympics events for nearly 40 years. She currently trains and competes in the snowshoeing and race walking events. In the past, this well-rounded athlete has also participated in basketball, swimming, downhill skiing, and soccer. 

This year, Theresa has been recognized for her dedication to the mission of the Special Olympics by being honored with the Spirit of Life Award. Theresa earned this award by exemplifying the true meaning of the Special Olympics by demonstrating leadership, spirit and selflessness, inspiring joy through sport and promoting inclusion and respect for all people.
