Organic Hair Salon and Spa Settles in Guilford

Owner Arlene Bouley's passion for living a holistic life radiates throughout Everlastings Salon and Spa.

Imagine.

This message, on an engraved stone at the entrance of Everlastings Salon and Spa, clearly sends a message. Imagine life without chemicals and toxic products. Imagine, instead, living and breathing organic.

This is exactly what Owner Arlene Bouley is doing in her new salon and spa. She has created The Original Organic Clean Air Hair Salon & Spa right here in Guilford and has a following among those who believe this is the healthy way.

“Let’s face it, over the years we’ve been exposed to so many different things,” said Everlastings Client Mary Lee Weber. After moving from New Jersey Weber and Bouley met in a Jazzercise class and Weber became Bouley's first local client.

Talking about her Everlastings experience, her hair covered with a plastic bonnet, she relaxed as she waited for the processing color to take hold.

“It’s just nice to come in and get your hair done and know that it’s natural and non-toxic and healthy.”

Being healthy is extremely important to Killingworth resident Bouley. After being diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease the lifelong hairdresser had to decide how to continue with a career she loved, but was harmful to her health.

“My Hodgkin’s was linked to hair dyes,” said Bouley. “It was an awakening for me. I didn’t get scared. I found my own cancer and I was, like, ‘I’m going to change my life,’ and I did.”

Bouley’s husband, Joseph, is a biological engineer by trade.  He assisted his wife by studying the chemical compounds to find just the right products for her. While she admits it was a lot of work, she said, “When you believe in something you make it work!”

Many of the men and women who come to Everlastings choose this salon and spa specifically for the organic line of products.  “My clients live their lives holistically. They eat organic and they don’t want the chemicals.”

A holistic, organic lifestyle has also blossomed for much of the staff since working at the salon. The staff of eight, including hairstylists, a licensed massage therapist and an esthetician, have found themselves changing what they eat and how they live their lives.

Hairstylist in training, Sarah Mrazik, remembers a time, not too long ago, when her diet consists of lots of junk food.  Not anymore!

“It’s awesome working here because I’m learning a different way of life,” the Clinton resident said. “My eating habits have changed. It’s actually helping me be healthier.”

Switching to organic hair products was the right move for Branford resident Weber. While she has been coloring her hair for years she finds the organic products suit her well. “It’s so different,” she said. “It’s so much cleaner, fresher, more natural. “

“It’s just so nice to come here and have this beautiful experience,” Weber said. “You come here and it’s so relaxing and stress free and wonderful.  You feel like you’re escaping,” she added. “People deserve this. They deserve an escape from the everyday.”

Bouley’s passion about living a holistic life radiates throughout of the salon.  “Knowledge sells,” said Esthetician Debbie Tremblay.  “She’s got a lot of knowledge and she shares that with people. She knows what she’s doing!”
