Who Needs Help, and Who is Willing to Help?

Do you want to volunteer to help with Hurricane Sandy recovery efforts? Do you need help cleaning up or know someone who does? Connect with each other here.

Here at Patch, an integral part of our mission is to connect local volunteers with local volunteer opportunities. In fact, each editor receives five paid days a year to volunteer in their community.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, there's plenty of folks who need help out there ... perhaps an elderly neighbor needs help cleaning up his yard, or a local shelter needs staffers, or an environmental group needs extra pairs of hands to remove debris and seaweed from the ravaged beaches.

So we'd like to provide this space for you, our central Connecticut shoreline readers, to give a shout out in the comments if you're looking for a way to help or you know someone or some group that needs help cleaning up after Sandy. Groups who are doing clean-up or outreach, let people know. If you want to volunteer, tell us about any special skills or equipment you have (got a chainsaw?).

One reminder: Don't put sensitive information such as addresses and phone numbers in the comments unless you're comfortable with it being public.

This article is cross-published to Patch sites in New Haven and Middlesex Counties that include the towns of Clinton, Madison, Guilford, Branford, East Haven, North Haven and North Branford.

I am from east Haven and I crochet hats. I know it will be getting cold and there are still many people without power.
I would be willing to set up somewhere to hand out hats to those in need. Not sure how or where. Maybe someone has an idea? My email is Shawn@theheadsaid.com Thanks

The Food Pantry tomorrow would be a good place. It is at the church on the East Haven green on Park Place from 11am to 1pm.
FCF November 2, 2012 at 09:23 pm
East Haven High is the evacuation center for town. They are open and you can bring your hats up there this evening.
FCF November 2, 2012 at 09:35 pm
East Haven Town Hall and Hagaman Library are taking food donations for the East Haven Food pantry.

Thank you!
I will see if I can get some hats together tonight in time to make it to east haven High. If not then the food pantry tomorrow sounds like a great idea. I will be there. :o)

@Shawn The shelter at the high school is going to be open for evacuees all weekend. I have no idea how many people are there. Food Pantry usually gets many people of all ages. Just tell them the Web Master told you to go there.

Ok, thank you. I will make sure I bring a bag over. Actually, my in-laws volunteer there. I can probably give them to them. But thank you for passing the word.
I will be donating a few bags of Non perishable food items to the food pantry tommorow as well as volunteering there to help our neighbors in need in the near future.
I will also be collecting non perishable food items Thursday November 8th at The East Haven Senior Center at an event I am hosting entitled "An Evening of Hope and Help for residents with Epilepsy" being held from 7PM - 8PM. If you have non perishable food items you would like to donate to the Food Pantry and are unable to make it to the Food Pantry you may bring your non perishable food items to me on November 8th and I will make sure they are delivered to the Food Pantry. If you have warm winter clothing you would like to donate to the homeless who survived the storm outdoors without shelter you may contact me at RHOFF08@AOL.COM and arrangements will be made to collect the items you wish to donate and I will deliver them to the homeless.

Ryan, it would be helpfull to know the load requirements you would need. What do want to power-up? What type of heating system do you have. Do you have an electric cloths dryer?
Corey Fyke (Editor) November 3, 2012 at 12:50 pm
Does anyone know of any cleanup opportunities (at beaches, perhaps)? Post here if you do and let people know where they can help.

I like to volunteer to help in anyway for anyone affected by the storm. I can't find any venue to contact can you advise.
cassi November 3, 2012 at 06:10 pm
I can't find any information about storm cleanups either.
cassi November 3, 2012 at 06:11 pm
Are there any cleanup events in your neighborhood? My husband and I want to help any way that we can. We both have all weekend off and would like to help out.
Evan DeFrancesco November 3, 2012 at 06:59 pm
I would also suggest donating blood to the Red Cross, especially since much of their supply has been diminished since the storm. The process only takes about 30 minutes, and one donation can save up to 3 lives. www.redcrossblood.org

The East Haven Food Pantry is always looking for volunteers. Contact Phyllis LaRoche at 203-469-1197 for information about the Food Pantry @ 39 Park Place the church near the Town Green.
Corey Fyke (Editor) November 3, 2012 at 09:05 pm
Thank you for that info, FCF. Any other organizations or individuals out there looking for help?
Sandra C. November 3, 2012 at 09:49 pm
I want to help in the clean up effort but I cannot find who to contact :/
FCF November 3, 2012 at 11:00 pm
I have not heard of any organized cleanup effort in East Haven. Our great Public Works department crews are removing the brush and limbs along the streets as well as many other tasks to support getting the town back to normal.

Anyone who needs to contact AT&T for repair, this is the fastest way

As for organized cleanup, or anything else for that matter. Get away from the Computer screen, open the door and find out who could use a hand.

We just got power last night, God Bless those hard working lineman. They worked endlessly. We delivered food to the food pantry, the one way all can say thank you to the lineman. I am now checking winter clothing to bring, this to honor the Companys that drove endless hours to get here and help. Remember if you see a crew working, bring them some cookies or hot coffee , or hot chocolate, it will be truly appreciated.
Ann Della Camera November 4, 2012 at 03:05 am
How awesome it is to read the blogs and see the town come together united to help. People have to learn lets not wait for a storm to be kind to each other.
Karen November 4, 2012 at 03:06 pm
